PhillyEducation Board Prep Leadership Development Program
August 1, 2014
This summer, PhillyCORE Leaders launched a new leadership development program designed to empower emerging education leaders – specifically, parents, teachers, and prospective parents – with the skills and resources to serve as board members and volunteer leaders of education organizations. The program was developed through a collaboration with Teachers Lead Philly, a network of practicing teachers devoted to teacher leadership in Philadelphia, and Young Involved Philadelphia, an organization that works to engage, connect and represent young Philadelphians.
Last fall, we collectively participated in Mobilize.org’s Philly Summit and won a grant through their Social Venture Challenge to launch PhillyEducation Board Prep.
The goal of the program is to support teachers and parents who are starting a new organization or interested in serving on the board of an established organization by giving them practical skills and knowledge. This summer, about 20 parents and teachers participated in five workshops and an independent case study. In the workshops, they learned about topics ranging from fundraising and financial management to diversity and inclusion. We are extremely grateful to all of our expert speakers for sharing their knowledge and experience.
Participants were also matched with a mentor individual and/or organization to study and learn from real-world experience serving on the board of an education nonprofit. This fall, we will reconvene to share findings and experiences from the case studies, as well as participate in a matching event with nonprofits seeking new board members.
